Is the NCA currently working on a program which protects beauty workers from the common cumulative trauma disorders associated with the profession? Would that program be specificly created to apply new technology in the area of professional tools which have been sanctioned and certified by a governing body whose interests are solely to prevent occupational disease such as NIOSH or OSHA? I would be so appreciative to know that our industry is moving in that direction, especially, since we are a high risk group. It is a fantastic concept that an organization as powerful as the NCA would be evolving in this new realm of science and art.I commend you in advance for making the right choices and look forward to seeing the mainstream media share the story of how one commited organization can improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of professionals. It will be a story for the history books as well as a post-industrial miracle when the entire industry can imbrace the type of change heading our way.Thank you NCA!

Jonathan, thanks for your comments - and for being an active member of our growing blog community. We have now over 700 voluntary subcribers and the list grows daily. I encourage all to join in the dialogue on this and other blogs.
Regarding your suggestion, i have to say that we’re more focused than ever on delivering the message of avoiding physical harm to one’s self in the daily practice of serving clients than the “big idea” you suggest. NCA’s SalonLife initiative is one that recognizes the importance of both physical and mental health and the role it plays in career success. As we work to spread that word, we hope to gain enough “energy” behind us that we can begin to consider mobilizing the industry behind bigger ideas such as yours.
Thanks again for particpaing!

A recent trend in the industry is to help focus on the individual professionals. Certainly times must change and a career in cosmetology elevated throughout the country to something more than just a salon employee. The talents and skills taught in this profession need to be accompanied by teaching life issues, harmony between style and financial success. To be proud to be a beauty professional who is financially successful should not be exclusive to the NY Elite or salon owners. All professionals in all cities around the country need self-esteem. Focus on the individual and change the paradigm from technician to professional. NCA Cares is a great tag line and all those that provide support to the industry can see this throughout the web site and magazine - Thank you.

It is important to recognize that the value of the dollar, number of professionals nationwide, economic demographics, level of skills, and a host of other factors are all just mere factors.Self esteem needs to already be there in order to swim upstream against the current of popular thought. Many of our greatest discoveries were made by men and women who were not only scientists and intellectuals, but, people of great character who had the tenacious qualty of perseverance. If we as an industry had leadership that was based on having more enlightened(guided from the heart) people, many of our problems would go away.I have faith that NCA can be the greatest positive influence on professionals, even the nation if we can take our position as activists for a better world. This industry has the power to inspire change in humans inside as well as outside.
